The Catcher in the Rye: Week 1

J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye is a simultaneously hilarious and heartbreaking look at one young man's feelings about the world at large. Over the course of a few whirlwind days, we get a peek into the mind of a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield struggling to find meaning in his life. Answer the following questions taken from chapters 1-3; one point of extra credit will be given for each correct answer.

1. Where is Holden as the story begins?

2. How did Holden let the fencing team down?

3. Why was Holden being kicked out of Pencey Prep?

4. Who is Mr. Spencer and why does Holden visit him?

5. What does Ackley do that annoys Holden?

An Introduction

What is My Master Plan? To help you (the student) gain knowledge about, and appreciation for, literature. Throughout this year, I will be posting weekly blogs with trivia from the novels we read in class. Extra credit will be given to those who answer the questions listed on each blog. To be frank, the trivia will be quite easy; most, if not all, of the questions will be able to be answered with a quick visit to Wikipedia. Answers my be submitted via the "comments" section. Since the first novel we'll be reading this year will be J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, I'll be posting the first "official" blog about it. See you next week!
